How to Beat Relapses in Four Easy Steps

There are two stages of addiction recovery that are considered to be the most difficult, according to people who staff rehab facilities as well as individuals who once been through rehab themselves:

  • Admitting that you are an addict, and
  • Maintaining your sobriety.

Both statements are true for just about anyone in recovery, but it’s the second one that proves to be more challenging and may deliver the greatest obstacles.  But it can be done. Regardless of the individual’s personality or length of dependency, anyone can maintain sobriety for a lifetime if they put their mind to it. Listed below are four easy steps to help avoid relapses and stay sober.

1. Keep yourself away from things that used to be a part of your drug abuse habits. This is the most important ingredient in relapse prevention. Avoiding the people, things, or places that remind you of using drugs, or encourage you to use drugs again, makes it easier to resist negative habits. In order to create a happy and healthier spirit, you must surround yourself only with people who are not taking drugs and will support you unconditionally in your recovery.

2. Identify what triggers your craving for drugs. A person in recovery should know what triggers them to use drugs. When you can identify those things that tempt you to resort to drug use, you can be prepared to face them with alternative behaviors that let you cope with your cravings in a proper and healthy way.

3. Never forget to pamper and reward yourself. Maintaining sobriety can become a full-time job, so it’s essential to pamper and reward yourself from time to time. To help encourage your efforts, simply reward yourself in a manner that will not compromise what you have obtained in sobriety. This means a “correct” and healthy reward. By doing this, you will have something fulfilling to look forward to, and in return, keep focused on staying drug-free for a lifetime.

4. Always reach out for help.  Exhaustion can happen at any point during the process of recovery, especially if you are alone. But trying to manage sobriety on your own is not really good practice. Open yourself and reach out for help when you need it because this how you can find the extra fuel once you ran out of gas. Support from anyone – family, friends, even strangers – can give you a boost and provide the extra lift that will help you maintain your state of sobriety. Each of us is unique, and tackle our problems in creative ways. When it comes to beating relapses, there’s no reason to limit yourself to the four steps mentioned in this article.
